Raquel Reyes: Goddess: The Landmark Memoir of an Early Internet Icon

Raquel Reyes is a digital model and writer whose emergence online in the late 1990s marked a formative moment in early internet culture. Best known for her 2005 memoir Goddess—now widely regarded as a cult text—her work occupies a singular place at the intersection of transgender visibility, digital aesthetics, and self-authored identity.Active during a period that preceded the rise of contemporary social media and influencers, Reyes cultivated a substantial online presence. At the height of her visibility, she was widely regarded as the most downloaded transsexual model in the world. Her website, logging approximately 250,000 hits per week, established a level of visibility unprecedented for a trans woman at the time—one that continues to be examined within academic contexts of gender, media, and digital creation.Twenty years after the publication of her memoir, digital restoration initiatives have reintroduced her autobiographical work alongside a curated selection of images drawn from original materials and subsequent archival efforts. Developed through Signal Found Productions in collaboration with the Trans Wiki Project, the restoration situates Reyes’ contributions within a broader continuum of LGBTQ+ history and early networked culture. In addition to the 2026 edition of Goddess, an accompanying audio documentary series, Raquel Reyes and the Goddess Recordings, hosted by Ariana Scott, began streaming in December 2025 across major podcast platforms, with continued distribution into 2026.
